START WITH 4 QUESTIONS
01

Where will it be used? Indoors, outdoors or both?

02

Does it need to travel? Will someone load it into a vehicle?

03

How much chair does the user need? Travel convenience or full-size support?

04

Any special needs? Higher capacity, reclining or seat elevation?

OPTIONAL IN-HOME SERVICE

Prefer not to handle delivery and setup yourself? White Glove Delivery is available on most models and can include in-home delivery, unpacking, assembly and placement of your new power wheelchair.

FULL-SIZE POWER CHAIRS

Portability Isn't Always the Goal.

If the chair will be used every day and doesn't need to be lifted into a trunk, a full-size power wheelchair deserves serious consideration. These chairs prioritize seating, stability, suspension and everyday performance over low lifting weight.

Pride Jazzy Elite HD front wheel drive power wheelchair
FRONT-WHEEL DRIVE

Pride Jazzy Elite HD

A substantial 450-lb-capacity chair when support, traction and daily use matter more than portability.

ELEVATING

Pride Jazzy Air 2

A specialized full-size chair that adds powered seat elevation to daily mobility.

Choose full-size when…

The chair stays assembled, gets used frequently and comfort or stability matters more than trunk loading.

Choose travel when…

The chair regularly goes into a vehicle and lifting weight, folding size or disassembly drives the decision.

BEFORE YOU SAY “IT FITS IN MY CAR”

The Real Question Is: Who Has to Lift It?

A wheelchair fitting inside the vehicle doesn't mean someone can safely load it. Transport style should be decided before comparing convenience features.

01 ONE FOLDED UNIT

Folding

The chair folds but is generally lifted as one main unit.

Check: Total weight · battery removal · folded dimensions
02 NO ROUTINE LIFTING

Full-Size

Designed around daily use rather than routine trunk transport.

Plan for: Ramp · vehicle lift · accessible vehicle · home storage
03 SMALLER PIECES

Disassembling

Some portable chairs separate into smaller pieces so the entire chair doesn't have to be lifted at once.

Check: Heaviest piece · number of pieces · reassembly
Never choose by folded size alone. Always compare the weight somebody actually has to lift.
UNDERSTANDING DRIVE TYPE

Front, Mid or Rear-Wheel Drive?

Drive type changes where the chair pivots, how it tracks and how it feels to maneuver. There isn't one universally “best” layout—the right one depends on the user's environment.

Pride Jazzy Elite HD front wheel drive power wheelchair
FRONT-WHEEL DRIVE

Drive Wheels Toward the Front

The powered wheels sit toward the front of the chair. Front-wheel designs can offer strong traction and approach obstacles differently from mid- and rear-wheel chairs.

  • Good for: mixed indoor/outdoor use
  • Strength: traction and obstacle approach
  • Example: Pride Jazzy Elite HD
ComfyGO IQ-9000 rear wheel drive power wheelchair
REAR-WHEEL DRIVE

Drive Wheels Toward the Rear

Rear-wheel designs tend to track naturally in a straight line and can feel familiar in open spaces. Turning characteristics vary by model.

  • Good for: open spaces and travel designs
  • Strength: predictable straight-line tracking
  • Example: ComfyGO IQ-9000
THE IMPORTANT PART

Don't shop by drive type alone. Turning radius, overall width, suspension, tires, seating and the user's actual environment matter just as much.

FIT THE PERSON + THE HOME

A Great Power Chair Can Still Be the Wrong Power Chair.

Before ordering, make sure the chair fits the user's body, the spaces they move through and the amount of time they'll actually spend seated.

01

Weight CapacityLeave appropriate room below the chair's maximum capacity.

02

Seat Width + DepthSupport the hips and thighs without squeezing or excessive empty space.

03

Overall WidthMeasure the narrowest doorway and important paths through the home.

04

Turning RadiusCritical for bedrooms, kitchens, hallways and apartments.

05

Foot + Arm PositionCheck legroom, footplate placement, arm support and joystick reach.

ALL-DAY USER?

Prioritize the Chair, Not the Scale.

If someone spends many hours every day in the wheelchair, seating support, suspension, fit and stability can matter far more than shaving pounds off the frame.

TRAVEL USER?

Then Weight Really Matters.

If the chair goes in and out of a vehicle frequently, total lifting weight, battery removal and folded dimensions become major buying criteria.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Power Wheelchair FAQs

Quick answers to the questions that matter most before choosing a power chair.

What is the difference between a power wheelchair and a mobility scooter?

A power wheelchair is typically controlled by a joystick and is often better suited to tight maneuvering and seated mobility. A mobility scooter uses a tiller or handlebars and generally requires more upper-body steering control.

Is a folding power wheelchair better than a full-size power wheelchair?

Not necessarily. Folding chairs prioritize transport and storage. Full-size chairs generally prioritize everyday seating, stability, suspension and performance. Choose based on how the chair will actually be used.

Which drive type is best?

There is no universally best drive type. Mid-wheel designs are often excellent in tighter indoor spaces, front-wheel chairs can offer useful traction and obstacle approach, and rear-wheel designs can provide predictable tracking. Always compare the complete chair, not drive type alone.

What is the best power wheelchair for inside the home?

Look closely at overall width and turning radius. A compact mid-wheel power chair can be an excellent starting point when hallways, kitchens, bedrooms and other tight spaces are the priority.

Can a power wheelchair fit in a car?

Many folding and portable models can, but fitting is only part of the decision. Confirm folded dimensions and, more importantly, how much weight somebody must actually lift. Full-size chairs often require a ramp, vehicle lift or accessible vehicle.

Can I take a power wheelchair on an airplane?

Some travel power wheelchairs use batteries designed for airline travel, but airline policies and battery requirements vary. Always confirm the battery specifications and requirements directly with the airline before travel.

What is an elevating power wheelchair?

An elevating power wheelchair raises the seated user electronically. This can provide better access to tables, counters, shelves and face-to-face interaction. The Pride Jazzy Air 2 is an example of this type of chair.

How do I choose the right seat size?

Compare the user's body measurements with the chair's seat width and depth. The seat should support the user without excessive pressure or excessive open space. Customers with complex seating or positioning needs should involve an appropriate clinician or seating specialist.

Do I need a heavy-duty power wheelchair?

A heavy-duty chair may make sense when the user needs higher weight capacity, wider seating or more substantial daily support. Capacity alone does not determine fit, so also compare seat dimensions, overall chair width and the user's environment.
