Will it work with my toilet?
The Dignity Lifts are designed to work with a wide range of toilets. Here's a breakdown of the compatibility criteria:
The Dignity Lifts XL1 will lift you. This bariatric lift has a weight limit of 650 pounds. It isn't easy to make a lift that will handle 650 pounds, so there are a few slight compromises.
- The strongest toilet seat we could find can only handle a maximum 450 pounds. Users between 450-650 pounds can use the lift with the plastic seat removed and the patient sitting right on the painted metal platform.
- The distance between handles is 25", which is about 6 inches wider than most office chairs and our other lifts. If that is not wide enough, the arms can also be pivoted backward to get them out of your way. Finally, if you need more space, the arms can also be removed.
The XL1 plugs into the wall. Be sure the plug is on a GFI circuit (bathroom circuits require this to prevent electrical shocks). If you have a plug near your toilet, maybe one you use for a blow dryer or shaver, that will work. Do not run an extension cord from a different room to power your Dignity Lift. Outlets outside the bathroom are not safe for applications that are close to water.
The XL1 will stand you up. The lift raises the back of the toilet seat 9 inches. Typically the lift begins at 18" and ends at 27" tall.
Height Requirements:
- DL1 and WL1 lifts are suitable for toilets with a rim height between 14" to 18".
- CL1 is compatible only with ADA height toilets, which have a rim height of 17" to 18".
- BL1 requires a rim height between 16" to 18".
- If your toilet is taller than 18", you can use a DL1 lift and add furniture risers under the feet to increase its height.
Width of the Toilet at the Bowl:
- Generally, the width of the toilet bowl is not a concern. All toilet bowls less than 16 1/2" wide should fit within the sides of the Dignity Lifts.
Toilets with Front Flair Tanks:
- Some toilets with tanks featuring a "front flair" may not be compatible. Most toilet designs work well with Dignity Lifts, but those with a forward-flaring tank, especially in modernist toilets, may pose an issue. A graphic is provided to help users determine if their toilet's tank flair is within acceptable limits.
For more detailed information and a visual guide, you can refer to this graphic. The lifts are designed to accommodate a wide variety of toilet designs, but it's recommended to check the specifics to ensure compatibility.
Will it fit my bathroom?
Check these things:
Clearance from Other Things: How far is your toilet from other things, like side walls, a tub, or vanity? The DL1, BL1, and WL1 lifts all need 24" of width, so your toilet needs to have 12" of clearance from the center-line of the toilet to any obstruction. (see picture below). Our CL1 needs 14" of clearance on each side.
Bathroom Door Swing: Does the bathroom door need to swing there? The swing of the door might interfere with your toilet lift. Measure 6 inches in front of your toilet's bowl and then be sure there is 24" of width available there.

Dignity Lifts can typically be serviced by an appliance repair technician. We can help see if there is one that services your area (rural customers might not qualify for this). Will a Dignity Lift Work with My Toilet?
Dignity Lifts work with almost all toilets. Below is information about what toilets work with their toilet lifts.
Height Requirements:
- The height of the rim of the toilet needs to be between 14" to 18" with DL1 and WL1 lifts.
- CL1 only works with ADA height toilets (17"-18" rim height).
- BL1 requires a rim height of between 16"-18".
- If your toilet is higher than 18", you can use a DL1 lift and add furniture risers under the feet to make it taller.
Width of the Toilet at the Bowl:
The width of the toilet is not usually a problem. Any toilet bowl that is less than 16 1/2" wide will fit inside the sides of all of our toilet lifts.
Toilets with Front Flair Tanks:
Some toilets with tanks featuring "front flair" may not fit. The shape of most toilets works great with all of our toilet lifts. Our lifts fit hundreds and hundreds of different toilet designs. It is rare to find a toilet that our lifts don't work with, but they do exist. Some modernist toilets have a tank that flairs forward. If that flair goes too far forward, the toilet won't fit any toilet lift. Refer to the graphic below to determine if our lift will work with your toilet.
